We’ve had several shows about tipping in restaurants, bars, and clubs. While everyone has different ideas about who to tip and how much to tip them, Kim and Don checked with Food and Wine Magazine to find out what they think about appropriate tipping. According to them:

“Your waiter is entitled to a tip based on the cost of the meal and the alcohol. The exception, when a wine steward or sommelier selects a bottle and serves you. If so, the wine expert is given a separate gratuity of 15% to 20% depending on the service, as well as the price and number of bottles ordered. Your waiter should only be tipped on the food portion of the tab. Customers usually hand a wine steward cash at the end of the meal. He should come to the table when you’re done. But, if you want to pay for everything by credit card, look for an extra line on the bill for the wine tip.”

They also found out that, according to Food and Wine Magazine, 15%-20% for the meal, 10%-15% for alcohol, and 10% for wine is the standard. Even if everything is combined on one bill, you should take care of those who took care of you. Tip the bartender 5% of the bar bill, then tip your server based on the meal portion.
