Ingredients
  • 1 cup shortnening
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3 cups self-rising flour
  • 2 cups candied cherries, chopped
  • 1 cup candied pineapple, chopped
  • 1 8-oz pkg chopped dates
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp allspice
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • 3 eggs, beaten

Preparation
  1. Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
  2. Cream sugar and shortening.
  3. Add eggs.
  4. In separate bowl, combine all but 1/2 cup flour and spices. Set aside 1/2 cup flour to dredge.
  5. Dredge fruit and nuts in 1/2 cup flour and set aside.
  6. Add flour/spice mixture to sugar mixture.
  7. Blend well.
  8. Add fruit and nut mixture.
  9. Stir until well combined.
  10. Form into balls and set on cookie sheets two inches apart.
  11. Bake for 25-30 minutes.
  12. Cool on racks.
