Poutine & Scandinavian food

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Jim wrote me about this new restaurant, check it out:

COMMENTS: Here’s a writeup I posted on www.roadfood.com:
There’s Poutine in Tempe AZ!!
I just found this place on Urbanspoon this AM and I’m headed there for Lunch! It’s called Beaver Choice. They bill themselves as a Scandinavian Bistro, with the owners coming from Sweden. They must have stopped in Quebec on the way here because they feature Poutine as a hangover cure for students from nearby ASU.
The also feature a inexpensive lunch menu for starving ASU students as well as a regular traditional Scandinavian menu  for Lunch and Dinner including things like Kotbullar – Swedish meatballs, Pytt I Panna – Swedish Hash and Gravlax.
Can’t write anymore because I’m drooling on my keyboard. I’m off to lunch and will report back later.
Read among yourselves and I’ll be right back:
http://www.beaverchoice.com/restaurant/campus.html
Well, I’m back from Lunch at Beaver Choice and can report a very pleasant experience. It’s in a strip center on the Southwest corner of McClintock & Broadway in Tempe, right behind Ted’s (Of Buffalo Fame) Charcoal Grilled Hot Dogs! I can now kill 2 birds with 1 stone!

It’s a storefront, family operated, very clean, seats about 20 + takeout. You order at the counter. I asked the young man if they had Poutine. He asked if I was from Canada! My suspicions were correct! The family immigrated from Sweden by way of a stint in the restaurant business in Quebec. That’s where they started making & selling Poutine.

The family was very friendly & outgoing, taking time to explain their menu and answering mine and other customers questions. I could tell many of the people who came in were 1st timers.

While I was waiting for my medium sized Poutine ($5.00), the Misses of the family was passing out samples of a delicious Almond Cake.

Having never eaten Poutine OR Cheese Curds, I had nothing to compare my meal too, but what I had was very good. Hand-cut fries, a delicious Brown Gravy and Cheese Curds about the size of a nut. Very tasty! The medium sized order was just right for a lunch portion. The large size would probably feed 2 people, the small would be a good size side dish.

I bought a dessert. It was a round ball, a little bigger than a Golf Ball, made from Cocoa Powder, Butter, Eggs and a little flour rolled in Coconut. Boy, was it RICH, but good!

I’m anxious to go back and try some of their Scandinavian Dishes I give them high marks!

Little Szechuan

Monday, January 3rd, 2011

We had a fabulous meal at Little Szechuan 524 West University Drive, Tempe, AZ  (480) 966-7660.  We were there at about 2:00PM and the restaurant had many customers.  You could tell that Swannie and Ted, the nicest husband and wife team,  who own the restaurant,  knew their customers, it felt like everyone was family.   They even opened after hours when they heard there was a group all the way from California to try their food.  They truly love their patrons, whether they know you or not.  We had a fantastic lunch.  Aren’t you ready for some great Chinese food?  Maybe this will tempt you.

Swannie rolling some succulent Moo Shu Pork for us.
